Knights of Warrington

Our Beaver Scouts enjoyed a night away at Queen Charlotte’s Wood with friends from 27th Warrington Beaver Scout Colony.

The theme was Knights and Dragons, so we watched a film about dragons, made helms & shields, jousted with lances from the back of horses (hobby horses), fired arrows at targets and had lots of fun exploring the campsite with a walk in the dark and then a longer walk in the sunshine the next morning.

Some of the Beavers said they stayed up all night long, but they were very good and didn’t keep the Leaders awake 🙂

Everyone had a great time and the leaders might plan another sleepover for later in the year!

District Beaver Challenge

Well done to our team of Beaver Scouts who joined in the Beaver District Challenge. They had lots of fun: cooking their own smores, identifying birds in a quiz, shooting mini-crossbows, working out how to transfer ball down several sections of drain pipes, making picture frames, and lots more.

The team from Woolston won, but we all really enjoyed ourselves.

Sponsored Cardboard Camp

What a fantastic effort by the Scouts!

On Saturday night, they braved the wind and rain to sleep out in cardboard shelters to help raise awareness of homeless issues. The Scouts raised sponsorship money that will be donated to “Room at the Inn” – a Warrington charity for the homeless. The Scouts remained cheerful throughout their ordeal, even when the canopy collapsed, dumping the entire night’s rainfall onto their makeshift shelters. 🙁

Thanks to: Chris for providing lots of cardboard and helping to take it away for recycling afterwards; Mike, Vicky, Nichala & Tom for giving up their Saturday evening; Shaun & Martin for supervising the overnight stay; and Mike & Vicky for coming back early on Sunday morning to help cook breakfast for the Scouts.

Thanks also to the church for allowing us to use their building and facilities for our “camp”.

Colditz Reborn 2013

A massive WELL DONE to our Scouts. This was the first time our group has joined in with this District Event, and our Scouts came second.

More importantly they had a brilliant time, learned new skills, demonstrated their fantastic teamwork and leadership skills AND were tired after only 24 hours of activities.

Who would have thought it possible to tire Scouts out so quickly, they were still a little lethargic on Monday – I hope the leaders have all recovered too!!!!

District Swimming Competition

Scout Skills Camp

What a brilliant weekend!!!
The weather was good – no risk of either sunstroke or flood. Ancient Akela gave up his time and van again to transport everything there and back. Thanks Ian 🙂

The Scouts all discovered that they can cook for themselves and wash up – let’s hope you’re all still practising those skills at home, you don’t have to be using a trangia or a campfire in a field!!!

Smudge visited us and trained all the Scouts in the safe use of Axes, Knives, Saws, Smudge sticks and Thug sticks – the Scouts were fantastic, listened quietly and then practised whilst the leaders watched nervously.

Our District Commissioner came for tea on Saturday night and watched the Scouts as they organised their own wide game.

On Sunday, there were more anxious moments for the leaders as the Scouts honed their skills with axes, knives and saws. There was just time left for the Scouts to make a souvenir t-shirt before it was time to start striking camp.

A huge thank-you to the Scouts – you made a fantastic team and the leaders thoroughly enjoyed the camp. (Next time you can cook for the leaders too).

Family Water Day

4th Lymm families gathered at Tatton Park Scout Camp for a fabulous day of water activities: kayaking, canoeing, rafting, coracles, katakanus and dinghy sailing; followed by a tremendous BBQ

The weather was kind to us, just enough wind for the dinghies, not too much for the kayaks and rafts and plenty of sunshine.

Anna Minde, Norway 2013

Six lucky Scouts had the experience of a lifetime on a trip to Norway. Sailing, rowing, fishing, swimming, cooking on open fires and making lots of new friends

They had an early start to catch the train from Crewe, various delays saw them running through the airport to catch their plane!!!  The English Scouts slept onboard the Anna Minde on Thursday evening before the Norwegian leaders turned up on Friday and claimed their bunks.

On Friday, the Norwegian Scouts arrived and helped to set up camp on the island. It must have taken a long time as that evening they were fishing from the powerboats by torchlight.

Becalmed on the island on Saturday, the team amused themselves with geo-caching, rowing, learning to splice, fishing and driving powerboats.

Sunday saw them meeting the ornithology team, and a few birds, before crossing the sound to the fortress. Then it was time to leave the camp and return for some home hospitality from their new Norwegian friends.

There was just time for a trip round the old town on Monday and joining in with a Norwegian scout meeting before taking their farewells on Tuesday morning.

Someone should explain to Ryanair that they flew past Manchester to get to Dublin – maybe they should provide parachutes and save the four hour wait in Dublin airport.

A huge THANK YOU to Simon for coming out of leader retirement to lead the trip.

Pond Dipping

Cubs enjoyed a lovely sunny evening at the side of Lymm Dam whilst Pond Dipping under the guidance of Ranger Tim.

They managed to catch lots of interesting creatures including: Water flea, Waterlouse, Caddisfly larva, Midge larva, Pond skater, PIKE (Yes a pike!!!), Water boatman, Lesser water boatman, Tadpole, Pond snail, Ramshorn snail, Damselfly larva, Water scorpion, Mosquito larva skin, Swan mussel and Water measurer.

The only creatures that went into the water were the ones that live there.

Well done to all the Cubs who helped to tidy up the dam by netting the rubbish that some other people had left behind.

Bear Grylls visits Cheshire Scouting
